Is Makima a friend or foe? Readers of the manga know, but the anime has done a great job adapting the original in making her seem a little (a lot?) off, showing how dangerous she is, giving plenty of hints of her being unhinged, showing the awful violence of her power, and overall helping us understand that she considers the final product worth the cost—even if it’s a cruel one. But is she a villain or an anti-hero? Well, you’ll have to wait for another season or two to find out (or just read the manga)!
