First Impression: The Dangers in My Heart Season 2

Winter break is over, and Yamada and Ichikawa return to class, but a lot has changed. Their relationship, for one. And second, Ichikawa has a broken arm. But before the teacher assigns Yamada to help him at school, he denies that the two are close. However, back to change #1: the two are closer now, and he’s able to apologize quickly. And in fact, as they go through school and daily life, Ichikawa is more able to say nice and thoughtful things to Yamada, like how nice she looks in a magazine shoot, and is able to ask for her help too. But when Yamada discovers that Ichikawa broke his arm while trying to take a photo for her, and then loses something precious he gave her, she ends up being the one who could use his help.

Oh man, I forgot just how much I love this series! I imagine that many viewers dropped The Dangers in My Heart early in the series when Ichikawa was so full of anger and violent thoughts, and when the crassness of the guys in the class was a bigger part of the series. But those who have hung on now get to enjoy the fruit of the relationship development between Yamada and Ichikawa. This episode shows just how much they’ve grown to care about one another—and perhaps even more wonderfully, how much the latter has grown. Just compare Ichikawa from this episode to Ichikawa in season one, episode one, and you’ll see how much his relationship with Yamada has changed his life. In fact, it feels like everything in this episode is built toward making us see how much of a positive impact the two have on one another and giving us warm feelings. The opening, for instance, just brings total joy with the glimpses of Ichikawa’s growth that it gives us from future episodes, and the end is just absolutely heartwarming as it shows the two as children and then growing up to find one another. What a precious couple of kids and what a precious series. This show is something very special.
