First Impression: Hero Without a Class: Who Even Needs Skills?!

Arel is a matter-of-fact, determined young man, so when he receives no blessing at the ceremony meant to give him a class, he doesn’t cry. He doesn’t yell. He doesn’t mope. He gets to work. And soon, Arel discovers that practicing day in and day out with the sword, and challenging peers who were given the swordsman class, will help him develop his skill even if he doesn’t have the blessing. It also helps that Arel learned from the very best—his mother, the sword princess. The question, though, is whether the effort he puts in is actually enough to give him the strength of a swordfighter. It won’t be long before he discovers his answer, as a monster attacks a new friend (or frenemy?) and the City of Swords begins to beckon him to come.

In HiDIVE’s latest ecchi fantasy offering…wait, there’s no sexual content? You’re telling me the first episode is benign, with no sign of any series ecchi content to follow?! Well, I’ll be! Yes, Hero Without a Class isn’t a mature series after all, despite streaming on HiDIVE; in fact, it leans a little toward the childish side. And while episode one focuses on Arel as a child, I don’t mean just the ages of the characters—the silly gags, the relatively flat animation, the hopeful tone, and the lack of true meanness in any of the characters (the leads, the bullies, or the enemies) helps craft a show that’s more appropriate for younger audiences than most of the anime we cover here. What this also means is that everything is a little mediocre and predictable, from the basic fantasy OP to supporting character who is obviously a tomboy but will “surprisingly” be revealed to be a girl. But that’s okay; Hero Without a Class is perfectly suitable if you just want to view an action series that’s peaceful at its core, something that’ll provide enough humor and action to keep you from falling asleep and will leave you with a smile. You might find this series to be a surprisingly nice addition to your watch list this fall!

Hero Without a Class: Who Even Needs Skills?! can be streamed on HiDIVE.
