We open with a review of S1. Aoi is a college student who can see spirits. An ogre showed up, claiming her late grandpa had promised her hand in marriage as collateral for a debt. She begged for a chance to work off the debt instead, cooking at the ogre’s inn in the spirit realm. As time went on, various adventures happened, and Aoi started growing closer to the inn’s master (he’s never been named, just called the master). Various characters that I only half remember show up to eat and chat. More characters drop by to thank Aoi for stuff she did during last season’s adventures. Amid hints of brewing trouble, drama strikes as one of the inn’s employees, a tanuki named Kasuga, abruptly announces she’s quitting to get married. It’s a political marriage, but it turns out she likes the guy, so it’s not all bad. All the relationship talk gets Aoi reflecting on her own feelings toward the master, and how she’d like to get to know him better.

Kakuriyo first aired way back in 2018 (yes, a whopping seven years ago), so I’m kind of surprised we got a follow-up season, though I’m certainly not complaining. I just wish it had, you know, come several years sooner, so I’d maybe remember more of what’s going on. Anyway, in addition to having one of my favorite anime OPs, the first season was a charming fantasy-adventure-slow-burn-romance. With the hints of looming intrigue and conflict in this episode, plus the focus on Aoi and the master’s relationship, I expect we’ll get more of the same in this new season (and that’s good!). The visuals are also quite pretty (at least, I think so), and the OP rocks. I quite like this show and definitely recommend it, but you seriously need to start with the first season, because you’ll be even more lost than I was if you start with the season 2 premiere.
Kakuriyo -Bed & Breakfast for Spirits- is streaming on Crunchyroll.
