First Impression: The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten2

It’s Day One of the new relationship between former class loner Amane Fujimiya and his classmate/next-door neighbor, the class “angel” Mahiru Shiina, and things are adorably awkward. Having confessed their love for each other, our two dorks now find themselves with the enviable task of deciding how exactly to act around each other and how to debut their relationship to the school. Since the school administration would probably look down on the two of them using the PA System to say “HEY! WE’RE DATING!,” they opt for the next best thing—hold hands on the walk to school. Of course, word spreads hard and fast, and the entire class is quick to offer up their congrats and some good-natured ribbing, finally glad that these two found their way to each other, while some of the guys bemoan the fact that they have no chance with their beloved “angel.” How will these two neighborly lovebirds traverse this new reality, and what personal changes will it bring about? Cue the spoiling shenanigans!

It’s rare that we get a second season of a romcom like this. Typically, the story ends with our couple confessing their love for each other, maybe even sharing a smooch, hug, or an extremely lewd handhold, the credits roll, and that’s it. So the fact that we’re getting a post-confession second season with one of the most adorable couples of the 2023 anime season is indeed special. Even though we haven’t seen these two for three years, the anime literally story wise and picks up right where it left off in terms of our characters, which means we get to enjoy their little awkward moments as they go public with their relationship, deal with the good-natured ribbing from their friends and classmates, and struggle to show a new level of affection towards each other now that they’re official. It’s frankly adorable. I love the first conversation when they’re talking on the infamous Couch-kun, and they’re trying to figure out what they can do as a couple, only to realize that they already do that stuff, like hanging out with each other and hugging. It’s just so awkward, yet so absolutely precious. Even though this show might look like it’s going to be all fluff and sugar, there’s still a bit of substance here, as this new relationship promises to bring some personal changes within Amane and Mahiru—the former seemingly wanting to shed his loner persona, and the latter just wanting to be happy and enjoy her time with the boy she loves. From a production standpoint, this show is pretty much exactly as we left it animation-wise in 2023, with a new OP by Masayoshi Oishi called “You Are a Lover,” and a new ED by Manaka Iwami called “Ureshii! Tanoshii! Daisuki!” Both are really good, but honestly, I miss the first OP from season one.

So, where does that leave us with Season 2 of The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten? Of course, I’m gonna give my recommendation for this one. If you’ve seen the first season, it goes without saying you should check out the second. It’s not that often that we get a story after the “Happily Ever After,” much less one that promises so much cuteness and character development, so we should enjoy every second of it. If you haven’t seen the first season, then what the heck are you doing here?! Hurry up, watch the first season, and come back to enjoy the romantic shenanigans of Amane and Mahiru. Get ready to get Spoiled!
