Ascendance of a Bookworm season four starts with a quick recap of Myne’s life prior to becoming a noble, before she moves into the home of her new father, Lord Karstedt. It’s a packed home: Rozemyne will also be living with his wife and sons, and she prepares for her second baptism. Thankfully, all three brothers, as well as her new mother, welcome her with open arms. But not everyone is so easy to warm up to, Rozemyne will discover, when she is formally adopted by Lord Sylvester, the Aub of Ehrenfest, and meets her rather immature younger brother.
First off, we need to discuss the animation styles. The recap depicting Urano getting crushed by books and Myne waking up in her new world seemed pretty consistent with the old animation; some of the later “new” animation, however, is jarring. Gunther’s first introduction, for example, felt off. As far as the music goes, the opening theme has a very different style from past seasons, and certain parts of the animation were not appealing. However, the opening sequence still had some similarities to the former seasons—the light background with the title of the episode, for example, was nearly the same as its predecessor, which is another detail I appreciate (and a bonus: the music for the title sequence after the opening theme was more consistent with previous seasons). They certainly attempted continuity, but it’s going to take time to get used to the new style; however, just as Myne must embrace change as Rozemyne, certainly we must embrace change too. Finally, as a light novel reader, I felt that the fast coverage of events in this episode was fairly consistent with the novel. I’m super excited for the rest of the season and will 1000% continue (and probably rewatch the episode at least once more today).
