A wise cat of the magical Cait Sith race has just birthed her kittens, but she’s about to discover another infant to add to her brood—a baby dragon who had been orphaned, but hatches because of the magic that spills over from the kitten births. Defenseless and not having the smell of a threat, he is adopted into the cat family. As the mother teaches her children the ways of magic and of the world, she explains to them that humans can be both kind and cruel, though as the dragon grows, he sees only their cruel side, leading to a confrontation. But can the gulf between the magical creatures of the forest and the humans be bridged? And can this “cat dragon,” despite becoming a “grumpy uncle,” be the one to make it happen?

What a lovely, one-episode anime! Serving as a fable about how humans and animals…wait. This isn’t just one episode? It’s an entire series? Indeed it is, though I think you’ll be wondering the same as I did after watching episode one to conclusion; it does indeed have the feeling of a fable that’s done and complete, but apparently serves as an introduction into the series proper. However, other than the “cat dragon,” we don’t know the characters who will be in future episodes (could this take place over generations and features new characters in every episode or arc?). And that might work out just fine, because this opening episode shows us that the storytelling in this series should be enchanting and meaningful. That means both the presence of pain—like the Bambi moment to start the episode to the awful deaths of both humans and cats—and warmth too—as in the relationship between one of the cats the kingdom’s prince. My guess is that the fable-like feel of the show will continue, and that while The Cat and the Dragon will mostly be an uplifting series, there will be moments of sadness throughout as well. I wish I could you tell more, but I’m just guessing at this point! I will say that I recommend you try out this lovely opening episode; I supposed we’ll discover together whether the series will be worth watching for an entire season.

The Cat and the Dragon can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
