A brief recap reminds us of where season one ended, and we are off to the races! With Yami and Vangeance captives in the Spade Kingdom, and the enemy Dante recovering as his colleagues, the Dark Triad, plot the downfall of…pretty much everyone else, the remnants of the Clover Kingdom’s forces regroup and prepare for a desperate rescue operation. At the end of last season, the good guys had a week to intervene and stop the Qlipoth ritual, with a grace period of two days for our hero Asta master his next power-up. This consists of figuring out how to execute Devil Union with Liebe (the demon he struck a bargain with through comradery rather than by force) under the ruthless guidance of Nacht, vice-captain of the Black Bulls (Asta’s guild). Unfortunately, Asta is not ready by zero hour, and must remain behind to continue practicing while the strike force infiltrates the Spade Kingdom’s stronghold. As the Spade Kingdom resistance forces create a diversion, our intrepid heroes warp into the castle. The Spade Kingdom elites summon an ancient demon to deal with the resistance, and things are looking grim for the poor rebels when— Look! Up in the sky! Is it a bird? Is it a plane! No, it’s…only my favorite character in the entire series Aaaaaah I’ve missed you so much!!!

Folks, we are back! Season one ended in 2021—that’s right, during Covid lockdown. Kids who weren’t in high school yet are now in college. And I am hyped for the new season: I’m listening to all the series’s openings as I write this (and feeling slightly disappointed that we didn’t get a new op for the new season yet; BC has never had an opening that wasn’t a banger). Of course, any anime returning after such a long hiatus has to balance recap with hitting the ground running; S2 gives us the barest sufficient reminder of where we left off, which is probably the best option. We don’t need to remember who every member of the massive cast is, nor recall all the previous arcs in detail. And then, action! Which has always been Black Clover’s style anyway, emphasizing action and plot advancement by and large. And speaking of plot, we are starting to get into the end game now (albeit a very, very long end game). Let’s go!
