Fall 2026 Anime Season: Our First Impressions Guide

Another anime season is upon us, and that means it’s time once again for our first impressions!

Fall 2026 is taking its sweet time getting started. A handful of anime will arrive before the end of September, but the season really begins to hit its stride on September 30, when the autumn schedule starts filling up in earnest. And then, as always, the watchlist gets a little ridiculous—though that’s all part of the fun!

There’s plenty to look forward to this season, too. We’ve got long-awaited returns like The Apothecary Diaries and Black Clover, second seasons of Blue Box and A Returner’s Magic Should Be Special, a new Magic Knight Rayearth adaptation, and a number of intriguing newcomers—including Firefly Wedding, Overgeared, The Vermilion Mask, and Hello, I Am a Witch and My Crush Wants Me to Make a Love Potion!

And a few of our first impressions are arriving early this time around thanks to Crunchyroll Anime Nights Sneak Peek, which gave us an opportunity to get an early look at several fall premieres before the season officially gets underway.

As usual, our writers will be sampling a wide variety of new and returning series over the coming weeks. We’ll be sharing what catches our attention, what surprises us, what doesn’t quite work, and—perhaps most importantly—which shows we’re actually going to keep watching.

#I’m Looking For a Zombie

First Impression: twwk

#I’m Looking For a Zombie does a nice job of combining cute elements with violence, though I admittedly had trouble at first accepting that these cute and innocent kids would bash zombies, set them aflame, and decapitate them with such enthusiasm—even if they do pray for and bury them afterward. But somewhere along the way, the writing allowed me to buy into it all. Part of this is due to how the characters are lovable—all of them, but Aki especially with her single-mindedness and cute, bloodthirsty energy (wait…zombies don’t have blood, right?).

The Apothecary Diaries Season 3

First Impression: twwk

…most of all, I was happy to just see Maomao; she doesn’t show up until six minutes into the episode, but once she does, there’s a sort of relief, like seeing an old friend after a long time. The series is excellent in a variety of ways, but Maomao is its centerpiece, and the 2026 anime season feels “complete” with her return.

Black Clover S2

First Impression: Negativeprimes

Of course, any anime returning after such a long hiatus has to balance recap with hitting the ground running; S2 gives us the barest sufficient reminder of where we left off, which is probably the best option. We don’t need to remember who every member of the massive cast is, nor recall all the previous arcs in detail. And then, action! Which has always been Black Clover’s style anyway, emphasizing action and plot advancement by and large. And speaking of plot, we are starting to get into the end game now (albeit a very, very long end game). Let’s go!

Blue Box Season 2

First Impression: Gaheret

I’m happy to report that Blue Box keeps up the good work. Taiki’s thoughts and reactions are as fun and relatable as ever, and Chinatsu remains endearing and mysterious. The art is on point too, and the luminous colors and the emotional soundtrack really elevate this story. With the romantic rivalry seemingly out of the picture, the show wastes no time and telegraphs to us the next obstacle the budding relationship of Taiki and Chinatsu will have to face. And interestingly, it is the thing that brought them together in the first place, the one that allowed each of them to trust the character of the other: sports.

A Certain Dark Item

t’s been six years since we’ve (virtually) walked the sunny streets of Academy City, so…Welcome back! And for all new arrivals, welcome to this spin-off of a spin-off! (A Certain Magical Index being the OG, and A Certain Scientific Railgun, the spin-off that superseded the OG, a la Terminator 2.) For anyone new, don’t worry, you can dive straight into this series, as the key bits of worldbuilding are conveyed early on, with a skilfully light touch. (No infodumps, fortunately!) There are plenty of Easter eggs for franchise fans, and even a cameo of Railgun herself (along with Misaki and Gekota!) But in general, this is a newbie-friendly intro, with only Frenda being a known quantity from the other series, where she was a supporting character in a few seasons. The rest of the crew are delightfully new, and really quite striking characters…

Chitose Is in the Ramune Bottle Part 2

The problem with Chitose in the Ramune Bottle—and I struggled with this, even as I enjoyed volumes and volumes of the light novel—remains here in season two, and will never go away: namely that this series is written from such a male-oriented point of view that you can’t even pretend that it isn’t. It’s not that it’s overly fanservice-y (though there a moderate amount)—it’s that the girls are so plainly written that they have virtually zero agency and are almost one glob of personality, existing only to further Chitose’s character growth. It’s hard to distinguish them (though admittedly somewhat easier in the anime and manga adaptations with their visual elements than the original light novels), and the problem is all the more pronounced because Chitose has wonderful subtleties to his character that make him compelling.

The Cold Sato-san Is Only Sweet to Me

First Impression: Michel

This anime is clearly going for a comfortable romcom vibe, and I think it’s doing a decent job at that. Sota seems to be a naturally kind and approachable person, which helps Koharu break out of her shell a bit. And contrary to Koharu’s moniker, she’s actually very sweet and sensitive. This indicates that there likely won’t be too much frustration and drama on the horizon, which I’m sure many viewers will appreciate. However, I have a concern that this low amount of conflict could lead to the episodes becoming a bit stale.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2

First Impression: T.R. Racki

Regrettably, it is difficult to engage with the emotional core of the series when the violence is so relentless. Some of it serves the world. Some of it establishes stakes. But much of it feels gratuitous. The episode rarely implies when it can go full on. It rarely cuts away when it can display. Some creators tell stories with bright colors or delicate lines. Edgerunners 2 paints in crimson. Meanwhile, Studio Trigger renders all of this with impressive skill. The animation is sharp, kinetic, and stylish, carrying a retro 90s anime aesthetic.

Dandivine

First Impression: twwk

…it is pretty jarring to step into the writing and directing style of fifty years ago. The contrivances are too much for a savvy, adult audience (it would be fine if I were a kid or watching a kid’s show, though the language and light sexual content let us know that this isn’t a children’s production). For instance, Gekiha and his girlfriend are walking together when she almost randomly mentions his uncle, who two seconds later appears behind them, leading to Gekiha and his uncle eating ramen (his girlfriend now nowhere in sight) and then a mecha battle. This is the type of thing that’s appreciated by those who like those old-school anime, but I don’t think it would be by today’s audience. So while you should hop on in to Dandivine if you really like giant robot series of yesterday, the rest of us aren’t likely to find enough entertainment value here for the show to keep our attention.

DARK MACHINE THE ANIMATION

First Impression: Gaheret

DARK MACHINE can boast some amazing visuals, as you can see for yourself above, as well as some strong editing that makes for a magnificent pace. The whole episode went by in a breeze, and I was left wanting more of this half-submerged world. It seems there will be conspiracies, video game matches, family secrets, and character-based comedy, all of which, if not mind-blowing, still sound pretty cool to me.

The Detective Is Already Dead Season 2

First Impression: Jeskaiangel

This premiere was needlessly confusing, partly because the episode is legitimately disjointed and fails to explain some stuff, but probably partly due to the fact that it’s been so long since the first season that I can’t remember things. Anyway, I’ll probably give this show at least a couple more episodes just because I remember liking the first season, but, well…this episode would be a TERRIBLE place to start watching this show. If the characters sound at all intriguing, start with season 1 or read the light novel, and if you did watch the first season, you might wanna read a recap or something to help you know what’s going on.

Even Though I’m a Super Timid Noble Girl, I Accepted the Bet From My Cunning Fiancé

First Impression: Michel

This is not the first otome isekai anime I’ve seen, so I wasn’t mystified by the quick rundown of the situation in the first few minutes. But to my surprise, this anime became so charming near the halfway point that I had no trouble staying immersed until the end of the episode. I think they managed to get the tone and pacing just right, so the emotions conveyed feel genuine. Pia’s fears make complete sense, and it feels refreshing to see an isekai backstory that’s relevant to the plot in the current setting, despite how simple her backstory is.

Firefly Wedding

First Impression: claire

…if the series continues on the vein of “debunking” Stockholm Syndrome and foregrounding the innovative cleverness of a woman whose options in life are essentially nonexistent, I’m all for it. But I suspect that this is not the direction we are headed, since the opening monologue from Satoko describes how she chose to love someone inappropriate. Double sigh. Nevertheless, I’m intrigued. It’s already surprised me like, four times in twenty minutes, so perhaps the series can redeem what seems to be a rather more frightening than usual Beauty and the Beast setup.

From Far Away

First Impression: twwk

Adapted from a 90s shoujo manga, it retains all the qualities you expect from such a series—the clumsy scatterbrained heroine, pretty boys with long faces, isekai that is mythic and connected to prophecy, and much more. And it works! Noriko herself could come across as obnoxious—she’s pretty helpless, cries occasionally, and screams all the time, but I found her quite lovable. I can’t wait to see her interact more with Izark, with whom I imagine she’ll be drawn to but have an adversarial relationship with as well. I appreciated how there was this hazy kind of blur applied to the animation whenever we moved points of view, which helped emphasize not only the different languages the two main characters were speaking, but the different worlds they’re from. The ED was also excellent—dark and mysterious—and the perfect way to end an episode that concludes on a surprisingly chilling reveal.

Full Clearing Another World under a Goddess with Zero Believers

fan. Aside from the weirdly out-of-place CGI goblins, the quality of episode one is fine, from the animation to the lively sound effects. And while Makoto isn’t memorable yet, I find him believable as a character who’ll grow stronger and become a hero in this world through the skills he does inherit and the mindset he brings. The goddess, too, is a pretty perfect mixture of pretty and silly; she features heavily in the cute ED, and I’m assuming will appear as Makoto’s main companion in all future episodes. I sometimes like series that do what we as anime viewers expect, even if they aren’t terrifically creative, so I’ll keep tuning in for a while; however, Full Clearing Another World under a Goddess with Zero Believers is going to have to show me some stronger writing soon if I’m to stick with the series in a sea of similar isekai.

FX Fighter Kurumi-chan

First Impression: claire

The frantic, frenetic, bubblegum bright OP and promo material for FX Fighter Kurumi-chan promise cute girls cutely trading in foreign currency (such a cute hobby!), but what we actually have here is a group of characters (three other girls get a brief intro in the final scene) who, as the narrator reminds us repeatedly, don’t know until it’s too late that they are on the brink of despair! I’ve never felt so tense watching a CGDCT slice-of-life series before. But that’s not a bad thing! In fact, it makes the series even more intriguing, since it’s clear from the outset that this is no copy-paste niche hobby series centered on educating viewers in said hobby (though of course it promises to do that too).

Hello, I Am a Witch and My Crush Wants Me to Make a Love Potion!

First Impression: Michel

What I appreciate about Rose is that, for better or worse, she’s not so uncomfortable around him that she filters every thought. She definitely just goes ahead and blurts out some slightly unhinged stuff sometimes, which leads to funny interactions. I have no idea how the status quo could continue for more than an episode or two, but I think I’ll keep watching, no matter what’s in store for these two.

Horror Collector

First Impression: Negativeprimes

This particular show may not be my cup of tea, but it does raise questions worth considering. Were this series a bit more like Boogiepop, rather than the anthology format it appears to have (which is less conducive to deeper character development), I would certainly follow it.

The Laid-Off Cheat-Granting Mage Enjoys a Second Lease on Life

First Impression: Michel

Often, when fantasy anime attempt to be playful with their use of tropes, it can feel a bit clumsy. Not so with this one! This first episode is silly from start to finish, but there is not a single boring moment. The art, animation, and sound effects work together perfectly to make this feel like a committed, high-quality comedy anime.

Magic Knight Rayearth (2026)

First Impression: twwk

What a breath of fresh air! This remake of the 1994 classic anime (based on the CLAMP manga that started the year before) looks and feels as 90s as possible while retaining a modern quality. In fact, as one who hasn’t seen the original—my main point of reference are other CLAMP works, like Cardcaptor Sakura—I found the mishmash of past and present to be just about perfect. The colors and quality of animation can no longer look like they did decades ago, but so much else retains the look of the time: from angles of the girls’ poses to the design of their eyes, from their exaggerated movements like face falls to their hair types and big glasses. And, surprise surprise, an ending song to episode one (“Hoshiakari” by Yurina Kawaguchi) that is as early 90s as you can possibly get. It’s a pretty perfect first episode, in fact, not just because of the flashback elements (and the slightly different tropes really stand out, in a good way, among a field of modern isekai), but because the characters and world-building are already compelling.

Magic Repo Man: Dumped by My Party, I’ll Cash In With a Cute Support Fairy to Become the Strongest

First Impression: Michel

This first episode was so generic that I had trouble seeing the point of it. We can already glean from the title that we’ll get a typical first episode where the protagonist gets mistreated by his party members, but it kind of drags on for too long here. The only thing I can think of is that this helps build up more resentment towards his former party members, so I guess this series might lean more into the revenge side of the “kicked out of the party” genre. His party members are utterly vain and callous, without any redeeming qualities. Meanwhile the protagonist is impotent and spineless.

Magical Explorer

Just as with the manga, I realize that the ecchi stuff is too big a part of the plot (eroge game, after all!) for me to want to continue the show, but I think those who like harem series and don’t mind that type of material as much as I do may be pleasantly surprised.

Nia Liston: The Merciless Maiden

First Impression: twwk

What I don’t want is a quick journey to Nia becoming an adventurer, and for the show to turn into more typical fantasy fare. It risks losing what’s so special about it if that’s the end goal—and I worry that it is. Hopefully, I’m off base, because a story of Nia developing her powers while encountering and interacting with the warm life around her is already making for an excellent series!

Overgeared

First Impression: twwk

The first half of the episode does rush through his discovery of the legendary item, but the later scenes—the movement back and forth between his real life and online life, and the second quest—are well-written and compelling. By the time the episode concluded, I wasn’t ready to leave the world of Satisfy and Grid’s adventure. And that is as good a sign as any that this adaptation works.

PSYREN

First Impression: Gaheret

Amamiya’s cry for help and the payoff for that were genuinely emotional moments I enjoyed. So I’m overall positive about PSYREN, and even if it has yet to impress me, it was a reasonably good time, and it could have potential, I think. I may continue, who knows.

The Ramparts of Ice Season 2

First Impression: Gaheret

What a great anime episode! It kept me glued to the screen from beginning to end, and I’m sure it will remain with me in the days to come. In some ways, it was a difficult watch. Each of these four characters is an insecure teenager who has been deeply hurt in the past, with a compelling and perfectly captured inner voice. Their progress toward each other has only come through painstaking efforts, yet it can be lost in just a moment! Every single little regression hurts so much, but the show makes you clearly see how things cannot be any other way right now, while still leaving a window of hope.

Reborn as a Space Mercenary—I Woke Up Piloting the Strongest Starship!

First Impression: twwk

Combined with unremarkable animation, character designs that are indistinguishable from other sci-fi series, and bad CGI, I started immediately thinking that this Reborn as a Space Mercenary is likely to find itself on the short list of worst anime of the season. But as the episode moved forward, I really started to get the 90’s and early 2000’s sci-fi and fantasy vibe of the show, complete with cringey jokes, smirking gangsters, and action scenes that are there just ’cause. The audience for this show is really those who remember or especially appreciate those simple anime (think The Irresponsible Captain Tylor as a highlight of the genre), so if you’re in that crowd—and I somewhat am—you’ll find a charm in the show.

A Returner’s Magic Should Be Special Season 2

First Impression: twwk

Desir is the type of leader that makes you want to be a better person, willing to do whatever it takes to save those he loves and to simply do the right thing, while the rest of his party believe in him with their whole hearts. All this love comes through in episode one to go along with a really cool fight scene between Azest and Hawk of Crimson Blood, intriguing details about what’s to come in season two (including the first appearance I can remember of a “goddess” or overseer figure), and an after-credits scene. What a start to the new season!

Romelia War Chronicle

First Impression: Michel

I really like the art style and character design, and the soundtrack was good. For me, the most important thing this anime would need to get right is the continued characterization and development of Romelia, as well as interesting new characters, which we’ll hopefully see in the next episode. With those things in place, this anime will be very much worth watching, and based on this first episode, it already looks promising.

The Seven Knights of the Marronnier Kingdom

First Impression: twwk

…most of the drama in this episode focuses on romance between two of the knights and possibly love interests, with one of the romances being built up with the common cross-dressing trope (see Princess Knight or The Rose of Versailles). Honestly, though, it’s hard for me to evaluate whether this series will be engaging enough to continue, because while I appreciate the pretty landscapes, the wonderfully romantic OP, and this being a throwback to a type of series that was more common decades ago, I also found myself somewhat bored in episode one. Maybe I’m just too boorish to appreciate this kind of series, but then again, maybe it just isn’t that interesting.

So What’s Wrong with Getting Reborn as a Goblin?

Sick and tired of truck-kun, fantasy anime, and goblin stories? Well, So What’s Wrong with Getting Reborn as a Goblin? may be just what you need to reverse that (very reasonably) jaded attitude. Episode one features cute goblins, interesting direction, and smart writing—and all three contribute to making this a series worth keeping an eye on.

Suikoden: The Anime

First Impression: Joli

This opening episode does an excellent job keeping the original feel of the Suikoden II game. Though it could be criticized for the story being somewhat cliché, a more accurate description would be “classic.” The animation, character designs, and voice acting are all very well done, making the anime both beautiful to watch and listen to. Taking place in a fantasy world, there are a variety of different creatures, including a cameo from the cute but deadly CutRabbit. There are also many characters, something the Suikoden series is known for, that I am very excited to see further fleshed out as the anime goes on.

Super Psychic Policeman Chojo

I admit, I don’t get all the connections, but it’s obvious to me that everything here is a throwback—from character designs to the loud background art. This I actually like, but because the humor usually misses for me, the episode—much like volume one of the manga—was rather boring. But if you’re a fan of manzai, buddy cop comedies, and old-school throwbacks, you may enjoy this episode more than I did.

A Tale of the Secret Saint

First Impression: Michel

Shion Wakayama’s excellent voice acting adds a lot of energy to Fia, which makes her a fun character to watch. The directing is on point as well, with an often lighthearted tone, while also pulling off the nightmarish visions of her past life. Technically, nothing particularly exciting has been going on yet, plot-wise, but the execution has been so solid that’s easy to be patient and watch it develop. In the meantime, it’s entertaining to watch her struggle to hide her secret identity.

TANK CHAIR

First Impression: twwk

Polygon Pictures, the “expert” in CGI, does its usual bang-up job (::sarcasm::), from mouth flaps that don’t quite match to skirts that flutter in unrealistic ways to hair that’s moves so unnaturally it makes you want to scream. It’s a shame, because the background art is tremendous, creating an urban city that’s both stunning and in decay, and the still scenes look pretty nice if you freeze frame them; they just look terrible in motion, which, you know, is a problem since this is animation and not manga. Nagi himself has a really cool look, like a Jason Voorhees confined to “tank”-like wheelchairs, and there’s both real emotion attached to the relationship between brother and sister and a dark morality to dig into with a young girl going down a murderous path.

TETSURYO! Meet with Tetsudou Musume

First Impression: Gaheret

hat’s behind that name? What’s behind those hills? Setting the story at college and not high school is a good move, and the banter between Misaki and Ya-chan puts the central conflict right in front of our eyes. There are stakes here, for Misaki at least. This is not the only pitfall the show avoids: As I was suspecting during the presentation of the railway agent, this anime is an outgrowth of a corporate property. That would be Tetsudō Musume, an expanded universe of mascot characters belonging to Japanese railway networks, companies, or trains. But by connecting the idea of a young woman deciding what to do in life and the idea of a club that travels by train to random points in real-life Japan (which sounds amazing to me), TETSURYO! avoids feeling like a commercial, for now at least, and creates a pathway to character development and a relatable conflict without losing its warm atmosphere.

Uncle’s Obsession with Cute Things

First Impression: Josh

Oh, of course I’m gonna be following this one, and I highly recommend you do too, especially if you’re an oldtaku like me (and a good chunk of the Beneath the Tangles writing staff…looking at you boss). Mitsutaka is quite possibly the most relatable character of the year, and following his antics as he tries to balance his love of all things adorable and his public facade promises to be entertaining.

The Vermilion Mask

First Impression: twwk

…this series calls back strongly to a classic anime filled with dark scenes, too: Fullmetal Alchemist. Yes, Peru looks a little like Edward with his braided blonde hair, but the tragedy of his childhood recalls the Elric brothers’ difficult past and how they left home as children. The animation, too, feels very 2000s, though vibrant in a way that’s consistent with current animation. Peru is very likeable, Gouon is not, and Sonarue is a strong female character who I’m hopeful will become a companion whose story we’ll admire as much as the protagonist’s. Oh, and did I mention that cliffhanger?

Vertex Force

First Impression: Gaheret

All in all, I went in fully expecting to dislike this one, but I’m happy to say I ultimately found Vertex Force to be an enjoyable, if humble, example of the mecha genre. I enjoyed the fights, I liked the atmosphere, and I was intrigued by the story. Indeed, the 3D sometimes steers into the uncanny valley, and the dialogue gets a bit stilted occasionally, but I found both Akira and Haruka to be quite compelling, and I appreciated the depiction of their brother-sister loving rivalry.

A Wild Last Boss Appeared! S2

First Impression: Negativeprimes

The initial recap of season one, as I said above, is missing one major plot point—the huge spoiler about Dina that drove the first season. This suggests to me that Dina’s significance in that regard is wrapped up now, and the story is moving on. A pity, because that was the main thing about season one that kept me hooked. I’m not particularly impressed by Crab or Scorpion, and nothing about the action or the characters’ goals in this episode particularly caught my attention.

The World’s Strongest Witch

First Impression: Jeskaiangel

That was ridiculous in the very best way. This premiere is chock-full of internet and video game humor, and it had me smiling or chuckling constantly. Amid all the levity, Lorna inadvertently acquires phenomenal cosmic power, and we get hints of broader repercussions for her actions as the story sets her up to have even more hilarious (mis)adventures. I thoroughly enjoyed this episode and definitely recommend it if you have any interest in a good fantasy-comedy.

Vermilian Mask sounds pretty good. I’ll have to check it out. I haven’t made my Fall Watch List yet, but you’ve given my a great place to start.
