Reiner Braun and Knowing the Whole Story

I think the Attack on Titan fandom has a love/hate relationship with Reiner Braun. I know I do. And I’ve been on the latter side of that recently since, ya know, betrayal, but I’ve since moved back to the other end. I caught up with the manga for the series upon hearing of a major… Read More Reiner Braun and Knowing the Whole Story

Spring 2017 Anime Thoughts

This season, the Beneath the Tangles team decided to do something a little differently. Instead of asking every staff member for  a number of detailed reviews, we are asking each staff member who watched new anime during the Spring 2017 two questions: What was the biggest surprise of this season for you? What was your… Read More Spring 2017 Anime Thoughts

Attack on Titan, Episode 37: Fail Like Hannes

eren jaeger coordinate

All season, I’ve been looking forward to a key death in this series (SPOILERS obviously ahead). For all the deaths that occur, mostly to young people that I think we’re supposed to connect with (no matter how little screen time many of them received), the one I most connected to, and perhaps the most tragic… Read More Attack on Titan, Episode 37: Fail Like Hannes

Attack on Titan, Episode 36: Theirs Not to Reason Why

In the midst of all the fighting in episode 36 (and other than those terrible, off-speed horses, the actions was amazing), we’re inching closer to the central question: what are the titans? There are many pieces that once put together, will present that answer, and one has to do with Reiner and Bertholdt. We know… Read More Attack on Titan, Episode 36: Theirs Not to Reason Why

Attack on Titan, Episode 35: Unlovable Loving the Unlovable

ymir and historia

Episode 35 of Attack on Titan finds a surprising focus as we learn of Ymir’s backstory, all the while as Reiner and Bertholdt try to abscond with Eren, the “coordinate.” Ymir challenges them, however, as she vows to do everything she can to meet Christa (Historia) one last time. Ymir’s past as an orphan used… Read More Attack on Titan, Episode 35: Unlovable Loving the Unlovable

Attack on Titan, Episode 34: Who is the Enemy?

Reiner is so very confused. At one point in episode 34, after joining with his partner, Bertholdt, to kidnap Ymir and Eren, he complains about how he needs a break and promotion from the military. The problem is that Reiner isn’t a soldier; he’s the enemy, but he’s lived as a soldier for so long… Read More Attack on Titan, Episode 34: Who is the Enemy?

Attack on Titan, Episode 33: The Danger of Community

Attack on Titan has been moving at a breakneck pace this season – it’s been quite a thrill ride. And it’s been much better than I thought it was going to be (though perhaps, as I mentioned on Tumblr, this is because I’ve kind of forgot how the story unfolded in the manga).   This… Read More Attack on Titan, Episode 33: The Danger of Community

Anime Fan Art: Attack on Tarot

A number of of us on Beneath the Tangles have a passion for fan art, those wonderful pieces that fans like you and me (but with amazing talent and honed skill) create. I’ll be posting illustrations, mostly developed by artists who have accounts on Pixiv, from time and time. Today, I’m introducing some wonderful tarot… Read More Anime Fan Art: Attack on Tarot

Attack on Titan, Episode 32: A Titanic Perspective

Colossal titan

Traitors. Traitors! How could could Reiner and Bartholdt betray mankind? How could they start all this destruction that led to so many deaths, including those close to the cadets? Episode 32 starts with a bang (and the animation and CGI stay awesome throughout) as the titan shifters collide. Eren Jaeger is of course especially angry… Read More Attack on Titan, Episode 32: A Titanic Perspective

Attack on Titan Episode 31: Who We Really Are

Attack on Titan has been brutal and non-stop this season. I’ve been mostly keeping up to date with the manga, but I admit I’ve forgotten much of the flow of what happens, so even in this episode I was surprised that this big revelation happened so early. SPOILERS ahead! It’s good timing, though, because Reiner… Read More Attack on Titan Episode 31: Who We Really Are

[twwk] I love been looking forward to To Your Eternity more than any other this season, not because I’ve read the manga—I haven’t (no spoilers, please)—but because the concept is unique and it was developed by the mangaka who also created A Silent Voice.
Sorry, Messi fans... 😆
[twwk] Koikimo is one of two shows this season playing around with the idea of a high school student potentially engaging in a relationship with an older man. I’d love to know your thoughts on it, and if you’re up to it, maybe through answering those questions in the comments:
