First Impression: Jingai-san no Yome

Jingai-san no Yome is an anime series based on a manga series of the same name. The premise of this short form series (3 minute episodes) is that Hinowa Tomari, a male high school student, was selected by a monster known as a Kanenogi to be its wife. The first episode of the series has us watch Tomari head to school, settle into his seat, and get called to the Principal’s office. We see the Kanenogi get shown a yearbook and pick Tomari out of a lineup. Then Tomari is told that the one he’s going to marry has been selected for him. His response? Huh? That was it. The entire rest of the episode (1.5 minutes remaining) was all theme song. No really.

The show promises cutesy married life with…monsters. I’m totally all for that in 3 minute bursts once a week. But a high school student marrying a monster? Well, that was the premise I’m not sure why I expected it to be any less weird. It’s still weird, but I’m fine with weird. If each episode builds on the weird and we start getting cute married life, I think it’ll be fun. I plan to keep at it and see how it turns out as the the 1.5 minute build up in episode one definitely has me intrigued for more.

Jingai-san no Yome can be legally streamed at Crunchyroll.
