Ghibli Month Comes to a Close with the Ghibli Tournament Winner!

At the beginning of the month, we started with all 21 movies in Ghibli’s canon and added would-be canon film, Nausicaa, to the mix in our tournament to decide the best Ghibli film. It was a tortuous tournament for Ghibli lovers—how can you decide between Spirited Away and Howl’s? Between Grave of the Fireflies and Kiki’s? Between Totoro and Porco Rosso? But through thousands of votes, the final two were determined: Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. (If it means anything, I think you all got this selection exactly right—those were the films I selected as one and two in my Ghibli movie ranking earlier this month.)

And the winner of the Ghibli Month Tournament?

..

.

It’s Spirited Away! Miyazaki’s beloved bathhouse / spirit world classic demolished most of its competitors on the way to the top, and came away with about 60% of the vote total in the final round. Ashitaka, San, and the gang tried their best, but couldn’t conquer this decorated foe.

Here’s the complete bracket:

I hope you had fun voting in the tournament, and through all our articles and features this month. It was a blast for us to celebrate the studio! Starting tomorrow, we return to regular programming, with manga reviews, fall anime first impressions, and our next light novel club session (this Friday!) on tap.
