Peter here, back with the my preview for the 2021 spring anime season. What did everyone think of the winter season? I honestly wish I had time to watch more anime, but this was a busy season for me so I could only focus on a few. Re:Zero was stellar as always, the Quintuplets drama keeps getting spicier, and Horimiya and Mushoku Tensei were much better than I expected they would be.

This coming season is pretty different from the past season as there are not nearly as many sequels, but there are many new shows and the mystery of how good they may end up being. Among those coming back, My Hero and Fruits Basket are the big names this season (and in fact, Furuba already dropped the dubbed version of its first episode), while shows like To Your Eternity, 86, Tokyo Revengers, and Edens Zero are coming in with a good amount of chatter in the community.

Unfortunately it doesn’t look like this spring will be bringing me any romance (in the anime department), but it will provide a lot of exploration with a ton of new shows coming out.

Once again there may be spoilers spread out so proceed with caution.

What I’m Watching

My Hero Academia (Boku no Hero Academia) 5th Season – April 3rd

How many season do we need of My Hero Academia? AS MANY AS POSSIBLE!

Things are heating up with what looks to be a battle between class 1A and 1B. I can’t wait to see this whole arc animated as there are so many characters who have improved and also characters we haven’t seen so far. More hero powers will be shown as we get a glimpse at class 1B, but I’m sure everyone is more interested at the cliffhanger at the end of the trailer.

How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord (Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu) Ω – April 9th

The first season of this show premiered in 2018 with (maybe) not much expectation, but this show does seem to have a small cult following. The first season was done by Ajia-Do while the current season coming out will be produced by Tezuka Productions. Ajia-Do did a pretty good job with the first season, but Tezuka Productions has a good track record with shows like Dororo and Sakamichi no Apollon. If you want to enjoy another isekai, harem, ecchi, comedy show you might want to give this one a try, but it’s won’t be for everyone as the ecchi-ness is a little on the strong side.

Fruits Basket: Final Season – April 6th

It’s almost over. We’ll finally be able to see the end of Fruits Basket and figure out all the questions we’ve had from “What is Akito’s deal? and “Tooru who are you choosing?” to “Wait, is there another love triangle happening with Akito in this trailer?”I’ve really been enjoying my watch of Fruits Basket and seeing the characters develop as the show has progressed. It’s easy to see why this story is so loved by so many people.

Shaman King – April 1

On a starry night, middle-schooler Manta meets Yoh Asakura, a young shaman who has the ability to talk to spirits, and also has the ability to let them possess him to use their powers. Yoh has a heavy duty on his shoulders: he must become the Shaman King by winning the Shaman Fight, a tournament between shamans that happens only once every 500 years. Joined by his spirit medium fiancée Anna Kyouyama, his personal samurai spirit Amidamaru, and his other friends, Yoh must also face a larger evil: Hao, a powerful man who aims to create a new world with only shamans by becoming the Shaman King himself.

What a time to be alive. Shaman King is back! I remember watching Shaman King when I was in elementary school and thinking it was the best. I even saw an English translated Shounen Jump volume at some bookstore and begged my mom to buy it because Shaman King was on the cover.

This is a completely new anime adapting all 35 volumes of the manga to the end. Studio Bridge will be producing this show. Although their only big work is the long running Fairy Tale, I’m hoping that they pull through with a quality adaptation that all Shaman King fans deserve.

The Way of the Househusband (Gokushufudo) – April 8th

He was the fiercest member of the yakuza, a man who left countless underworld legends in his wake. They called him “the Immortal Dragon.” But one day he walked away from it all to travel another path—the path of the househusband! The curtain rises on this cozy yakuza comedy!

A Netflix exclusive, The Way of the Househusband looks like a super fun comedy. Our own Twwk has told me that many people have been looking forward to it as it is a highly rated comedy. The manga has a solid rating at 8.31 and JC Staff has put out some quality shows, but with it being on Netflix we may not be able to watch it on their service until the show is completed (US streamers).

What I’m Interested In (New Shows)

Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro (Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san) – April 11

Nagatoro is a freshman in high school who loves teasing and torturing her older male classmate! What’s her motivation and why does Senpai put up with her? Does Nagatoro just want to create misery for Senpai? Or maybe she secretly likes him?

Probably the most confusing show I’ve seen for this coming season. The yandere looking Nagatoro seems so cruel to senpai Hachiouji Naoto. Don’t really have much to say about this one except I’m going in hoping for some romance.

Combatants Will Be Dispatched! (Sentouin, Hakenshimasu!) – April 4th

With world domination nearly in their grasp, the Supreme Leaders of the Kisaragi Corporation–an underground criminal group turned evil megacorp–have decided to try their hands at interstellar conquest. A quick dice roll nominates their chief operative, Combat Agent Six, to be the one to explore an alien planet…and the first thing he does when he gets there is change the sacred incantation for a holy ritual to the most embarrassing thing he can think of. But evil deeds are business as usual for Kisaragi operatives, so if Six wants a promotion and a raise, he’ll have to work much harder than that! For starters, he’ll have to do something about the other group of villains on the planet, who are calling themselves the “Demon Lord’s Army” or whatever. After all, this world doesn’t need two evil organizations!

For all you Konosuba fans, this is the show to watch. When you stream this trailer, you can just tell that the main character exudes the same vibe as Kazuma (kazuma desu). Well guess what guys, this show is created by the same man that made Konosuba, Natsume Akatsuki. So get ready for some shenanigans and maybe some very detailed finger movements.

To Your Eternity (Fumetsu no Anata e) – April 12

A lonely boy wandering the Arctic regions of North America meets a wolf, and the two become fast friends, depending on each other to survive the harsh environment. But the boy has a history, and the wolf is more than meets the eye as well…

To Your Eternity is shrouded in so much mystery, but looks like it’s going to be a very story-driven show. The animation looks great and the trailers all been superb at grabbing my attention to see where this will go. Animated by Brain Base, who have animated many great story-driven series like Durarara, Baccano, and Spice and Wolf, this might the top anime I am looking forward to watching.

I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level (Slime Taoshite 300-nen, Shiranai Uchi ni Level Max ni Nattemashita) – April 10th

An at-home comedy about a powerful girl who doesn’t work too hard!(⋈◍ ˃ᴗ˂ ◍)。✧♡

After dying of overwork in the real world, I’m reincarnated as an immortal witch, and I spend 300 years enjoying a relaxing life. At some point, though, I end up at level 99! All those years spent killing slimes to make the money to pay the bills gave me a ton of experience points… Rumors of the level 99 witch spread, and soon I’m up to my ears in curious adventurers, duelist dragons, and even a monster girl calling me her mom! “This isn’t a dojo, so don’t come here to fight me…!” I’ve never been on an adventure, but I’m the strongest in the world…

What’s going to happen to my relaxing life?!

Can you imagine just spending your whole life killing slimes and then maxing out your level? But what about if everyone wanted to challenge you once they found out what level you are? This show gives off such a relaxing and comedic feel that is bound to draw many slice of life fans in. I’ll be giving it a try for at least a few episodes.

Edens Zero – April 11th

It is the year X492, an age in which people freely travel through the universe. Rebecca, a video-creating B-Cuber, visits the robotic world of Granbell and meets a young man with special powers: Shiki, who’s lived his entire life among machines. Soon Shiki is exploring the cosmos with Rebecca, encountering new places, people and things, and making friends along the way.

From the same creator as Fairy Tail, Edens Zero is a shounen story best described from my friend: “weak boy becomes strong boy with help of friends.” I love how Shiki’s goal is to make friends. It’s such a simple plot line, but has so much room for development. Looks like Fairy Tail fans will love this show as it has similar vibes and even a strangely familiar character.

Osamake: Romcom Where The Childhood Friend Won’t Lose (Osananajimi ga Zettai ni Makenai Love Comedy) – April 14th

The story centers around Sueharu Maru, an average 17-year-old high school boy who has never had a girlfriend, and the “heroine battle” between his beautiful first crush Shirokusa Kachi and his childhood friend Kuroha Shida.

Alright, who doesn’t have a guilty pleasure of watching harem anime? My love for romance anime will force me to watch this show. There were so many times I wished the childhood friend would win, but maybe this time she actually will.

Tokyo Revengers – April 11th

Takemichi Hanagaki is a freelancer that’s reached the absolute pits of despair in his life. He finds out that the only girlfriend he ever had in his life that he dated in middle school, Hinata Tachibana, had been killed by the ruthless Tokyo Manji Gang. The day after hearing about her death, he’s standing on the station platform and ends up being pushed over onto the tracks by a herd of people. He closes his eyes thinking he’s about to die, but when he opens his eyes back up, he somehow had gone back in time 12 years. Now that he’s back living the best days of his life, Takemichi decides to get revenge on his life by saving his girlfriend and changing himself that he’d been running away from.

Imagine if you could go back in time and change the past. Takemichi is thrown back in time to possibly change the fate of the life of the only girlfriend he ever dated in high school. With huge Erased vibes, the story seems interesting, but I think the trailer needed to give me some more to make it a priority for me this season. I’ll be looking forward to reading the reaction of this show when the first few episodes come out.

86 EIGHTY-SIX – April 11th

A War Without Casualties

The Republic of San Magnolia has long been under attack from the neighboring Giadian Empire’s army of unmanned drones known as the Legion. After years of painstaking research, the Republic finally developed autonomous drones of their own, turning the one-sided struggle into a war without casualties-or at least, that’s what the government claims.

In truth, there is no such thing as a bloodless war. Beyond the fortified walls protecting the eighty-five Republic territories lies the “nonexistent” Eighty-Sixth Sector. The young men and women of this forsaken land are branded the Eighty-Six and, stripped of their humanity, pilot the “unmanned” weapons into battle…

Shows like this always draw me in to try them out. Made by A-1 Pictures (Sword Art Online, Promised Neverland, 7 Deadly Sins), I expect this to be quality (unless it’s like season 3 of 7 Deadly Sins). I haven’t seen a show in a while that goes over world politics and war like Gundam or Code Geass, so 86 has me curious. I’m thinking of waiting for the first few episodes to come out and see the reaction to this show before I start it.

Mashiro no Oto – April 3rd

When Setsu’s grandfather died, so did Setsu’s “sound”—his unique creative spark. Grieving, he goes to Tokyo to find himself…but manages to become totally, literally lost on his first day. Only a chance meeting with Yuna—aka Yuka, the hostess—saves him from being robbed. At first glance their lives seem totally different, but they’re both striving for their dreams—hers, of being an actress, and his, of developing his talent with the shamisen—and it could just be that life in the raucous, unfeeling urban sprawl of Tokyo could just be what binds their fates together…

This last one was added to this list really late. As I was browsing the shows for this season, I ended up watching the trailer to figure out the vibe of this show. I really enjoyed watching Kono Oto Tomare! and this seemed to be similar in the sense of teens playing a not (western) popular instrument and creating a story around it. From the more somber tones, this show seems like a mix of Kono Oto Tomare and Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu. And if that comes to be true, this show should be amazing.

What’s Coming Back?

Moriarty the Patriot (Yuukoku no Moriarty) 2nd Cour – April 4th

Moriarty the Patriot was an interesting watch when I first started it, but put it on hold as I wasn’t ready to watch something more serious. The first season’s rating ended up right below an 8 on MyAnimeList and is done by the famous Production I.G., which gives me a lot of confidence to hop back in when I’m ready.

Megalo Box 2: Nomad – April 4th

In the end, “Gearless” Joe was the one that reigned as the champion of Megalonia, a first ever megalobox tournament. Fans everywhere were mesmerized by the meteoric rise of Joe who sprung out from the deepest underground ring to the top in mere three months and without the use of gear. Seven years later, “Gearless” Joe was once again fighting in underground matches. Adorned with scars and once again donning his gear, but now known only as Nomad…

I’ve had Megalo Box on my backlog for a long time and this second season trailer reminds my of Rocky. It looks like the main character Joe is coming back to fight in the ring. The main VA Hosoya Yoshimasa has done a ton of works and is probably most currently known for his role as Azumane Asahi from Haikyuu. Having seen the popularity of this show when it first released and the cast I hope season two can meet up to everyone’s expectations.

Zombieland Saga Revenge – April 8th

From throughout the ages, a group of legendary girls have become zombie idols to save Saga Prefecture. It’s the return of the cutting-edge zombie idol anime! One day, Minamoto Sakura lost her life in an unfortunate accident. Then, ten years later… After Sakura wakes up in a strange mansion, mysterious idol producer Tatsumi Kotaro tells her that she will be joining a group of legendary girls to form an idol unit. The seven girls are charged with a quest to save the fading Saga Prefecture and adopt the group name Franchouchou. After overcoming the difficulties stemming from their different ages and different periods of history, their undead zombie bodies allow them to defy expectations of what idols can be. During the final winter of the Heisei era they performed their first featured concert at Karatsu’s Furusato Exhibition Hall, Arpino, taking another step towards becoming a legend. Now, in the modern Reiwa Era… The curtain rises on a new chapter in the story of Franchouchou, as they march towards a bright future full of hope. “

HYOUINNNN KUOMAAAAA!!! Wait…is this the wrong show? I have not personally watched this show, but our past podcaster David has told me it was a fun watch. I mean zombies, idol girls, and MAPPA? Sounds like a recipe for a fun time.

The Slime Diaries (Tensura Nikki: Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken) – April 6th

Dear diary… I got reincarnated as a slime.”

Even in another world, lives aren’t always on the line. There’s plenty of work to be done, from feeding the community and forging the items the community needs; as well as plenty of play …and hijinks throughout! Join Rimuru and friends as they kick back and enjoy their daily lives.

This is really a change of pace from watching the main series for That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. If you haven’t been watching the current season, there have been some developments that have shocked viewers. So before I say anymore… go watch the show! It’s great. But being a slice of life fan myself, I’m also interested in seeing all of the day to day life in the kingdom of Tempest.
