First Impression: 16bit Sensation – Another Layer

All you 90s kids, have you ever wondered what it would be like to travel back to that time? Konoha Akisato gets the chance and is now stuck in 1992 with no way of returning (as of episode 1)! Konoha is an illustrator for a video game company that creates half-rate bishojo games about beautiful girls in romantic situations—often visual novels. She aspires to draw cute girls on fantastical adventures but can’t fulfill her goal while working at a company that doesn’t share her vision. Feeling down after her idea for a game is shot down by her boss, Konoha heads out during her lunch break and stumbles upon a used video game store run by an elderly lady. A box full of classic bishojo games at the dirt cheap price of 100¥ catches her eye, stunning her so much that she begins to ramble to the elderly shop owner all about why these gaming artifacts are so wonderful. After work, Konoha passes by the shop again to thank the lady for listening to her earlier but finds the shop closed, with only a bag full of the games she was interested in sitting on a table. The owner left a note telling Konoha to enjoy the games, and upon opening the one named Dokyuusei, she’s transported to 1992! The episode ends with a quick introduction to new characters that run a small video game programming office that seems to be working on bishojo titles.

When I read the title of this new anime, I imagined that it was about 16-bit video games from the golden era of gaming. To my surprise, it’s all about the bishojo genre which is certainly not one I’m interested in but I decided to give it a try. Konoha has a lot of passion for creating a world where her heroines can thrive and I like that about her, as well as her knowledge of how resellers market games at much higher prices. I’ve done this myself, so I’m aware of the business! Above, I shared some images of the new games that are mobile-based and the new trend that isn’t helping her company grow its profits. These are all actual games that you can play, which is interesting. The anime doesn’t have anything that stood out for me besides the concept of focusing on bishojo games, so I’m looking forward to seeing what else is shared regarding game development in later episodes. If you are into these kinds of games you will enjoy this one more than me!

  2. Oo, the story for this anime sounds pretty unique! Of course, the first thing I thought of when I read “transported back in time to 1992” was What?! No internet?! I don’t think I could survive back then!

        1. Haha I agree! Yeah I was around in the dial up days, so it kind of was like having no internet. I remember waiting FOREVER for an image to even load….and using AOL CD promos to never pay internet for a few years lol.

          1. Oh man, AOL CDs! Now there’s a blast from the past! You know, my kids find it really amusing when I imitate the sounds of a dialup modem. #protip
