Is Your Name Overrated? Twwk Joins Cinematic Doctrine To Talk About Shinkai’s Beloved Anime and His Melancholic Filmography

One of the true pleasures of leading Beneath the Tangles is connecting with other Christians who are doing exciting things in the digital space, and occasionally getting to partner with them. We’ve created a Discord server, for instance, for just that purpose!

And along those lines, I’m excited today to post about a podcast I recently joined as a guest. Cinematic Doctrine provides “an opportunity for Christians to take a step in imitating Paul’s spirit-led mission by engaging and understanding the culture of cinema, whether it be the new blockbuster or art-house film, and dissecting the themes and messages there-in.” Cool, right? It’s run by Melvin Benson, a real cinephile and student of film.

He invited me on to join him to chat about one of my favorite films: Your Name. Melvin, however, doesn’t share my love for the movie, which opened up some great discussion about what works and doesn’t work with the film, and its place in Shinkai’s overall filmography. Come listen!

In addition to YouTube, you can listen to Cinematic Doctrine on Spotify. Please give Melvin a follow on both platforms and check out all that he’s doing on his website and his Letterbox’d account as well!
