This is the day Ito has long looked forward to. Her mom has remarried, and Ito no longer has to do all the chores and give so much of her support for the single-parent household; she can now be a “normal” high school girl. Well, think again, Ito. What her mother failed to mention is that not only is she getting a new father, she’s also getting four younger brothers, which might not be the worst thing in the world, except that the oldest, Gen, doesn’t seem to want Ito around. How will she adjust to this new, complicated family? And will the boys all come like their onee-san after all?

Say hello to Ito, another memorable addition to the hall of plucky, sincere heroines of romcom anime! Please Excuse My Younger Brothers doesn’t take but a minute or two to show us her quirky, cute personality as she enters super tryhard mode in an attempt to win over her new four brothers (well, three plus one she’s so far only glimpsed very briefly). It’s really a lot of fun because the writing is light and silly, and the animation and music fit the mood as well—though I will say a little too much happens in episode one in order to get to the big moment of acceptance that’s usual for romcom premieres. Yep, there’s that word again: “romcom.” That’s what this show 100% is—a step-sibling, reverse-harem romcom. While I doubt it’ll ever go full Oreimo (at least not this season), it’s as clear as day from their first interaction, and then even more obvious as each scene passes, that the anime is setting up the pairing of Ito x Gen. Incestual relationships are my biggest no-no in anime, though to play the devil’s advocate, this series is light-hearted and fun, and treating the “relationship” as such, unlike Oreimo‘s attempt to advocate for it or the more sexual relationship in other series. Take that as you will in deciding whether to try the episode, and whether or not you’ll stick with it.

Please Excuse My Younger Brothers is streaming on Crunchyroll.
