Pia Rockwell is a noble girl who, at the age of ten, suddenly remembers her previous life as a Japanese University student. These memories are nothing short of traumatizing for her, as they contain vicious betrayal and her violent death. As if that wasn’t enough, she realizes that the world she’s living in is the world from an otome game she played in her previous life. It turns out that she’s one of the villainess characters who will be betrayed by her fiancé, Rufus, in seven years. This causes her so much stress that she’d rather call off the engagement right now than have her heart broken in the inevitable future. She asks her fiancé to agree to it, but he senses that she’s hiding something from him. After he forces the full story out of her, he takes her at her word. But this only makes him more adamant in refusing her suggestion. Instead, he makes a bet with her: If he really ends up betraying her, he’ll pay her handsomely, and he’ll make sure she’ll never become destitute. He puts this in black and white, and only expects her to marry him if he wins the bet. Pia does her best to trust Rufus, but despite his best efforts, the dread stemming from the prophesy still lingers on.
This is not the first otome isekai anime I’ve seen, so I wasn’t mystified by the quick rundown of the situation in the first few minutes. But to my surprise, this anime became so charming near the halfway point that I had no trouble staying immersed until the end of the episode. I think they managed to get the tone and pacing just right, so the emotions conveyed feel genuine. Pia’s fears make complete sense, and it feels refreshing to see an isekai backstory that’s relevant to the plot in the current setting, despite how simple her backstory is. Because we see part of the episode from the perspective of Rufus, there is a chance to immediately add depth to his character, a chance which is utilized well. There is something very tender about seeing a character with deep anxiety be comforted by another who wishes for nothing else than to prove his loyalty and devotion to her. I think the dynamic between these two characters is already good enough to make the series worth watching. I’m won over, so I’ll be tuning in for episode two.
