On the Clock: Results of the 2018 Anime Draft

Beneath the Tangles’ first anime draft is over, and it was an exciting one! If you follow us on Twitter, you’ve already seen the results, which we’ve been tweeting out one by one all day. But here they are below, round by round. Be sure to check out the full rosters at the bottom of the article and let us know you think will win!

But to give some background, we invited Kurt of the Violet Evergarden Tumblr (team name: SOS Brigade) and long-time aniblogger, Tommy (Eyeshield 20/20), to join four of our writers, Samuru (First and Over 9000!!!), Emdaisy (First and Ghoul), R86 from our “Ask Sensei” column (Pegaus Meteor Fist), and Newman’s Nook columnist, mdmrn (FTBL) to select any anime series that is currently airing or has yet to air. At the end of next winter’s anime season, we’ll score their selections, based on Anime Planet and MAL scores, to determine which team is the winner—so the idea to select the best scoring (in terms of popularity and critical acclaim) anime from this season up through next winter’s. Each team drafted their teams over four rounds. Here are the results:

23. Eyeshield 20/20, Boruto
24. First and Over 9000!!!, Mob Psycho, season 2

Definitely lots of intrigue in the draft—for one, Attack on Titan going number one was a surprise. On my draft preview, I had either Steins;gate 0 (which went third) or Gintama (which slid to fifth) going first. And strategies varied as well, with some teams picking the tried and true, others focusing on this season’s anime, and some going after series that don’t even have start dates yet, with One Punch Man 2, Chihayafuru 3, and Made in Abyss season 2, among others, set to pay huge dividends if they air within our time frame.

The biggest shocker? Seven Deadly Sins season 2, which I had ranked #5, did not get drafted at all. Perhaps there will be a chance to pick up this anime as a free agent somewhere down the line…

Here are the teams below and their selections. Good luck to everyone! We have a few surprises in the store along the way this year, so you’ll be able to follow along and see how each team is doing as we make our way to 2019!
