Violet Evergarden is a fighter. Abused, neglected, and turned into an instrument of war, she survives bloody battles on the front lines and even the loss of her arms. But, there’s another famed anime character out there that lost limbs and had them replaced by mechanics, too, someone who is maybe even emotionally and physically stronger than Violet.
Losing an arm and leg to save his brother’s soul, Edward Elric continues to move forward to restore Alphonse and himself while fighting against monstrous and almost invincible foes. That description sounds like this tournament, which pitted Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood against such heavyweights as Bleach, Attack on Titan, Cowboy Bebop, and in its closest battle, My Hero Academia, before squaring off again Violet Evergarden in the finals last week. The championship match, though, was never in doubt, as the Elrics and crew ran away from our favorite auto memory doll, winning the championship match 64% to 36%.
Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s tournament! We brought in new elements, like Twitter voting and the bracket challenge, and you responded! In fact, we ended just shy of 10,000 votes for the tourney! Here’s the full bracket if you’d like to take a look back.
We can hardly wait for next year’s tournament! Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, which has won all four years in the tournament without ever having a really competitive match, will be retired, and so 2020 will crown a new champ. We’ll also incorporate other changes, so look forward to another month of fun competition then! But until next April, FMAB gets to reign another year—congratulations to that series, and thank you, again, to all our participants!

Thank you for retiring Full Metal Alchemist from future tournaments. My friends tell me it’s good, and if I ever watch it I could end up really loving it. But seeing it constantly steamroll everything else was just getting dull.
