Anime has a fascination with Christianity. For decades, priests and nuns have filled out anime casts, the church has often been presented as a corrupt source of evil, and Bible verses have been quoted in funny ways or epic moments. Typically superficial in nature, these Christian elements are fun to identify and track. But could they also pack more depth than their use as throwaway lines, aesthetic, and simple plot devices?
As we seek to go “beneath the tangles” and find deeper levels of meaning through anime, we want to identify how God’s word is used in animation. Though rarely intended to offer any sort of scriptural accuracy (Evangelion anyone?), we contend that God’s fingerprints can be found everywhere, even in a decidedly non-Christian art form. And this contention is particularly true when the Bible is involved, for scripture contains the very words of God. There’s truth conveyed within them, even if it’s not the ideas that Obito or Major Kusanagi (and their writers) are trying to express.
With that in mind, we’re starting a new project here on Beneath the Tangles that’s similar to our Christmas anime one. Our ambitious goal is to list all Bible verses cited or paraphrased in anime.
This post will be a living document as we crowdsource this project, asking you, dear readers, to help us fill in the gaps—and there are plenty, as we haven’t even combed our own pages for instances where scripture is referenced in anime. But we’ve got a good start below. Most of this initial list was pulled from Rod Jackson’s site (he did all the hard work but graciously allowed us to post these), with a few others from additional sources (1) and given by our own staff as well. But there is a ton we’re missing, which is where you come in.
If you know of any other instances in anime where the Bible was quoted or paraphrased, please comment below with the 1) anime and episode number, 2) the verse(s) referred to, and optionally, 3) the quote given and by which character, as well as any other pertinent information. Also, if you can fill in some of those gaps from our initial list (or notice anything that’s inaccurate), please let us know about that as well. We’ll credit you here when we revised the post.
Thank you in advance for your assistance, and God bless!

Really glad to see Yuuki Konno made it on here. She’s a great SAO character (besides the fact that her skirt could’ve been moved up a little bit, but that’s just me), and one that I look to in my life. As a Catholic (don’t remember if it was confirmed or not by Reki), she is a great role model, making the most out of life and being happy despite dealing with AIDS. But even she uses ALO (and other virtual worlds, such as Serene Garden and Asuka Empire) as an escape (though, to be honest, there’s not much she would be able to do in the real life anyway; she basically lives in virtual worlds at the time of the Mother’s Rosario side story.)
I didn’t see any listings from “Kids on the Slope” (and it’s been several years since I’ve watched it, so I couldn’t tell you if there actually are any Biblical verses quoted) but it might be worth looking into since I remember that one of the two main characters is a practicing Roman Catholic.
For sure. I remember scenes of them singing in a church, but I can’t remember scripture. Worth looking into!
Aldnoah Zero (Ep. 5), “Those who do not work, do not eat” (2 Thessalonians 3:10)
Those who do not do not eat is also quoted in Ascendance of a Bookworm, when Myne is instructing Gil on why he needs to work.
It always sticks out to me because when I hear I know what it’s referring to, but I always think of it in the form: “The idle shall not eat the bread of the laborer.”
We had the Aldnoah.Zero one, but not Bookworm. Thank you!
This may be fudging it a bit since the quote is from a video game, but in Persona 4 Golden one of the sub-plots involves Uehara Sayoko, your supervisor at your part-time janitor job at Inaba Hospital. As her storyline progresses, it becomes clear she is dangerously overworking herself to avoid her personal issues. One evening she finally collapses from exhaustion, and when she tries to charge back to work immediately after waking up one of your dialogue options is “Physician, heal thyself”. (Luke 4:23)
Ooooh, that’s a good one! Anyone out there know if the same was said in the anime?
I just checked her character bio for the animation and they don’t cover her “overworking arc” at all in the adaptation, so it’s unlikely 🙁
Vinland Saga in S2 E13 quotes the end of Matthew 5 I think from verse 43 onward. I believe it starts with “You have heard it said you shall live your neighbor and hate your enemy…”
