One of my favorite things about attending anime conventions isn’t the guests, the art, or even the anime itself—it’s the people. I never felt that more strongly than last year, when I cohosted a panel at Anime Matsuri.
This year, we’re coming back, as Tiff of ShortStuffArts (Etsy/YouTube) and Few of the Many (Instagram/ YouTube) and I return to host another panel on Christianity and anime!
Our panel, entitled “Biblical Themes in Anime,” will take place on Friday, July 24, at 5:30 p.m. Here’s the summary:
Many anime tell powerful stories about redemption, sacrifice, forgiveness, perseverance, humility, and hope—themes that Christians will recognize from Scripture.
Stories matter. Jesus often taught through parables, using relatable stories to reveal deeper truths and help people better understand themselves, others, and God. In a similar way, anime can invite us to reflect on important questions of faith, character, purpose, and how we live our lives—and storytelling can help us process these ideas.
Join us as we explore biblical themes found in anime such as Frieren, Madoka Magica, Jujutsu Kaisen, and more. We’ll discuss topics like redemption, forgiveness, pride versus humility, mentorship, wise decision-making, and perseverance, while considering how these stories have encouraged, challenged, and inspired us in our own lives.
We’ll also leave time for audience participation, so come ready to share your own examples and favorite anime!
One thing I especially love about these conversations is that they’re never one-sided. Some of the best insights come from attendees who share how a particular anime impacted them or helped them think differently about faith, relationships, purpose, or personal growth.
